April 14 Mark Steven "The Bird" Fidrych (August 14, 1954 – April 13, 2009)Mark "the Bird" Fidrych, the fun-loving pitcher who baffled hitters for one All-Star season and entertained fans with his antics, was found dead Monday in an apparent accident at his farm. He was 54. Marilyn Chambers (April 22, 1952 - April 12, 2009)Marilyn Chambers, the pretty Ivory Snow soap girl who helped bring hard-core adult films into the mainstream consciousness when she starred in the explicit 1972 movie "Behind the Green Door," has died at 56. February 06 William Norris "Billy" Powell (June 3, 1952 – January 28, 2009)Billy Powell, keyboard player for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd died at his home in Orange Park, Florida on January 28. No autopsy was performed, but the cause of death is assumed to be a heart attack.
Following the plane crash in crash in 1977 that took the lives of singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarisr Steve Gaines, his sister and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and both pilots, he briefly joined a Christian rock band named Vision. His keyboard playing was often spotlighted in Vision concerts. Powell also spoke during the concerts about his newly found faith in Jesus Christ.
Powell rejoined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987 for a tribute tour, and remained with the band until his death. Guitarist Gary Rossington is the only member from the classic lineup who continues to record and perform with the reunited band today.
June 28 George Carlin (May 12, 1937-June 22, 2008)It’s difficult to believe that George Carlin is gone. Along with Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, he redefined what comedy was for our generation. June 02 Bo Diddley (December 30, 1928-June 2, 2008)Bo Diddley, a founding father of rock 'n' roll whose distinctive "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm and innovative guitar effects inspired legions of other musicians, died Monday after months of ill health. He was 79.
April 28 Rush ConcertSorry to be so behind in trying to keep this blog up to date. I saw the band Rush on 4/15 at the Amway arena in Orlando. This was the second leg of the Snakes And Arrows tour. Have added a clip from the concert to my music section. Next up is Pat Benatar on July 8 at the Hard Rock in Orlando.….hope to see you there. April 09 Tax Time BluesWell, I just finished doing my taxes, which is always a chore, and for some reason it always reminds me of the song “Taxman”, by the Beatles. I searched YouTube and found a clip of the late, great George Harrison singing the song live in 1991, so I have added that clip to my music list. This is from a live concert from Japan in 1991, and interestingly enough Eric Clapton is playing with him…..Enjoy March 25 Van Halen Tour Continues?Well, I guess it’s official. The rescheduled dates for all 17 postponed shows have now been announced. The first scheduled date is April 19, in Las Vegas. Still no word on exactly what “medical condition”, Eddie Van Halen is being treated for. Perhaps by the restart of the tour we will know more. The link to the new schedule is: http://www.van-halen.com/tour.html
March 17 Van Halen Saga ContinuesI have been putting off this update until some definitive information is known, but so far there is very little to go on except for rumors. What is known is that following the show in Fort Lauderdale on the 20th of February it was announced that the next week and half of shows would be rescheduled so that Eddie could undergo some medical tests for an undisclosed condition. In the last week it was announced that the rest of the tour would be postponed until some time in April? I am adding a music clip that was taken of the encore at the end of the Fort Lauderdale show. At the end of the song (Jump) Eddie throws his guitar down and topples an amp as he leaves the stage. Whether this is Eddie’s anger at a technical problem or a sign of a deeper problem with Eddie or the band is anyone’s guess. March 06 Jeff Healey (March 25, 1966-March 2, 2008)I am embarrassed to say that I was less than familiar with Jazz, blues musician Jeff Healey. He was an incredible guitar player, and the fact that he lost his eyesight at the age of one, makes his ability all the more amazing. The rare cancer that cost him his eyesight finally took his life at the young age of 41. I have added two videos of Jeff in my music section.
